Ex Nihilo is a Latin term meaning “out of nothing,” and is used in a theological context to refer to the first chapter of Genesis where God created the universe out of nothing by merely speaking the word.

Ex Nihilo gives credit to God’s authority over our lives as our creator; it indicates that in some intrinsic fashion communication is a fundamental aspect of God’s divine order; and that all creation before the Fall was “good.”  Although creation was corrupted by the Fall, we in Ex Nihilo aspire to those attributes of God which the Fall cannot touch – love, truth, humility, and faith – attributes which our fallen natures may prevent us from fully attaining, but which the reminder of Ex Nihilo ever points the way and reminds us of our debt to God.
